Comparison of the environmental performance of different treatment scenarios for the main phosphorus recycling sources Organic Eprints
Hörtenhuber, Stefan Josef; Theurl, Michaela Clarissa; Möller, Kurt.
Efficient phosphorus (P) recycling from rural and urban areas is becoming an increasing issue due to the scarcity of natural P deposits. Based on a life cycle assessment (LCA), we analyzed the environmental performance of 17 different P supply and recycling approaches from urban wastes, biosolids and slaughterhouse wastes compared with the two conventional inorganic fertilizers phosphate rock and triple superphosphate. The results show that many recycled P fertilizers (RPFs; e.g., digestates from urban organic wastes, biosolids and their ashes, meat and bone meal (MBM) and its recycling products) are competitive in terms of LCA results compared with conventional P fertilizers. For each of the P recycling sources, one or more treatment options were...

Increased utilisation of renewable resources: Dilemmas for organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Adler, Steffen A..
Minimising outputs of waste and pollution by recycling and efficient utilisation of renewable Resources is of common interest for organic agriculture and the concepts of circular and bioeconomy. However, in practice, many efforts to increase recycling of various biological materials in organic agriculture are hampered because standards for certified organic production and processing tend to prefer natural products while avoiding processing and especially chemical processes. This creates several dilemmas and weakens the position of organic agriculture as a spear head in the development of better resource utilisation which will reduce environmental impacts from food production. Based on practical examples derived from projects aimed at better utilisation...

INCREASED UTILIZATION OF RENEWABLE RESOURCES: DILEMMAS FOR ORGANIC AGRICULTURE Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Adler, Steffen A..
Minimising outputs of waste and pollution by recycling is a common interest for organic agriculture and circular economy. However, in practice many efforts to increase recycling of various biological materials are hampered because standards for certified organic production and processing tend to prefer natural products, avoiding processing and especially chemical processes. This creates several dilemmas for organic agriculture, especially when organic stakeholders argue that organic management is the best way to achieve a sustainable development.

Pathways to phase-out contentious inputs from organic agriculture in Europe (Organic -PLUS): POSTER Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Schmutz, Ulrich; Evans, Adrian; Sørensen, Claus Grøn; DeMarchi, Massimo; Nikolaos, Katsoulas.
A recent Horizon 2020-call asked for research to phase out contentious inputs from organic agriculture. During 2018-2021, Organic-PLUS, led by Coventry University, UK will identify and evaluate such inputs, provide technical solutions to phase them out, and assess economic, environmental and social effects of such changes. The project is is funded as a Research and Innovation Action under Horizon 2020-SFS-08-2017.

Pathways to phase-out contentious inputs from organic agriculture in Europe: WP SOIL (WP5) Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin.
In the Horizon 2020-project "Pathways to phase-out contentious inputs from organic agriculture in Europe" (Organic PLUS), the WP SOIL (WP5) explores the topics of peat, plastic and animal-derived fertilisers as contentious inputs to organic farming. Peat is studied as an input in various growing media in horticulture. Plastic is studied for use as a soil cover. Manure from non-organic sources is the main focus, but fertilisers complying with vegan standards will also be studied (e.g. green manure). The poster gives an overview of the planned activities in this WP during the project period, 2018-2022.

Policy brief on the organic approach to inputs – Plant protection products, fertilisers, veterinary drugs and feed additives explained Organic Eprints
Lang, Isabella; Tamm, Lucius; Speiser, Bernhard; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Herforth-Rahmé, Joelle; Walkenhorst, Michael; Bünemann-König, Else; Maurer, Veronika; Moeskops, Bram; Busacca, Emanuele; Gall, Eric; Magid, Jakob; Schmitt, Annegret.
The plant and animal health care strategy in organic farming strengthensagro-biodiversity, protects the environment as well as animal and human health. In addition to fully exploiting preventive options, the use of external inputs such as plant protection products, fertilisers or veterinarymedicinal productsis allowed to prevent inacceptable losses in productivity or animal suffering. However, external inputs need to comply with organic standardsas well as European legislationand aretherefore carefully evaluated before any decision on acceptance is taken.Organic farming systems should aim at reducing dependency on off-farm fertilisers to the lowest feasable level to ensure closed nutrient cycles and avoid nutrient leakage and contamination. This policy...

Rapidly growing Annexes? EGTOP's role in assessing new and existing inputs in organic growing. What is the scientific basis for Annex changes? Organic Eprints
Oudshoorn, Frank.
EGTOP (= the Expert Group for Technical advice on Organic Production) aims to provide advice to the European Commission concerning the authorisation of the use of products, substances and techniques in organic farming and processing, to develop or improve organic production rules and, more in general, on any other matter relating to the area of organic production. Frank Oudshoorn from SEGES, Denmark participates in EGTOP since 2018, and he is also active in several work packages in the Organic-PLUS Project. In this presentation, he described the work in EGTOP, where topics selected to be treated by this Group are described and analysed in a dossier, often written by appointed sub-Groups. EGTOP assesses the dossier and makes a decision (advice). Digestate,...
